A taxi service has started serving Minerva and neighboring communities.
Cindy Downin and Giovanni Luddeni, a mother-and-son team, launched Elite Cab to transport passengers to the southeast corner of County Stark.
Minerva-based Elite Cab will serve Malvern, Robertsville and Kensington, Downin said. The service will take customers to appointments and shopping in the Belden Village area, as well as flat rates for a trip to Akron-Canton Airport.
Downin said it was the second time she has started a taxi business. The first was in Greenport, Long Island, New York, while she was living there to care for her mother. In 2008, she launched Cindy’s Cab and kept the company in business until it was sold in 2012.
This time his son was looking for an opportunity to have his own business. Starting a taxi service came to mind because of Downin’s past experience.
She began the summer to research the community’s transportation needs.
“The need is there. It’s definitely here,” she said. “We have had great feedback.”
The area is not served by drivers for Uber or Lyft, Downin said. There is no other local taxi company or public transport service.
Local businesses have used Elite Cab to transport employees and visitors from out of the region. This saves some visitors the cost of renting a vehicle, Downin said.
Elite Cab also provides food delivery to restaurants in the Minerva area and operates late on Friday and Saturday nights for those who decide they need a ride home, instead of driving after drinking.
Business hours are 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday. The service opens at 8 a.m. on Friday and Saturday and stays open until 2:30 a.m. the next day in case bar patrons decide they need a ride home.
