SPOKANE, Wash. –News Direct– Minuteman Press International Inc

Plese Printing & Marketing, which has been in business for 32 years and is independently owned by Kim Plese, has been sold to Spokane natives Christy and Scott Johnson. Christy and Scott have rebranded the business as Minuteman Press – Spokane and operate from the same location at 4201 E. Trent Ave.

Christy and Scott Johnson are the new owners of Minuteman Press – Spokane (formerly Plese Printing & Marketing) located at 4201 E. Trent Ave.

About the sale of her business, Kim Plese says, “I had no intention of selling my business as we were growing rapidly after the pandemic. Suddenly my longtime production manager of 12 years passed away and I was devastated. He was only 36 when he died. When Minuteman Press regional vice president Chris Jutt contacted me, it was two months later and I decided it was time to think about selling. I took his call seriously and we moved on from there.

She continues, “My business was my ‘baby’ and it’s an emotional process to sell. The patience and understanding of Minuteman Press and Chris Jutt has been tremendous in guiding me through this time.

“Minuteman Press had qualified buyers (and Spokane natives) Christy and Scott Johnson ready to buy a business like mine. I was able to leave the company easily and didn’t have much to do in terms of training. I am very grateful to Chris Jutt and Minuteman Press for making this possible for me. I am now in a position to move on to the next chapter of my career. – Kim Plese, Former Owner, Plese Printing & Marketing (now Minuteman Press – Spokane)

Spokane natives return home to fulfill their dream

For Christy and Scott Johnson, buying a business in Spokane allows them to return to their hometown and be closer to family and friends. Christy says, “We love getting to know our customers, many of whom are also small business owners. It’s wonderful to have the opportunity to support our customers and the many causes and entities they represent. Scott is from Spokane and I grew up in Cusick. Buying this business allowed us to return to Spokane, which has been fantastic.

They chose to buy Plese Printing & Marketing and join the Minuteman Press franchise network so they could start with established businesses while being fully supported and trained in the industry.

Scott says, “We loved meeting Kim Plese and learning how she has built her business over the past 32 years. Minuteman Press has a program that connected us with Kim and helped us become owners of the business. It is a dream come true to buy this business and receive training and support along the way.

Prior to purchasing the company, Scott worked as a mechanical engineer and Christy worked as an accountant. Scott says, “I spent 24 years as a mechanical engineer working on semiconductor quality and reliability and building technical teams around the world. Christy is an accountant and started out in corporate America. Over the past decade, she has worked for small businesses fulfilling numerous roles in finance, human resources and operations management. She has extensive experience working in and with small businesses. He continues, “Several members of my family have had successful businesses in Spokane, so it seemed natural to take this step.”

“We are excited to serve our customers in Spokane and surrounding areas with the products and services they need to market, grow and operate their businesses. Our services include: door-to-door direct mail, variable mail service, banners, yard signs, business cards, product labels, show cards, tri-fold brochures, custom letterhead, envelopes, custom carbonless forms in 2 and 3 part, bespoke spiral bound books, self-covering booklets and promotional products. We also offer solutions to personalize your physical office space, such as custom wall coverings, window graphics, and interior and exterior signage. We plan to add vehicle wraps in the future. The company we bought already has the equipment, the people and the capacity to do this work. Bring us your wish list and together we will make it happen! -Scott Johnson, Co-Owner, Minuteman Press – Spokane

When asked what he loves most about owning a business or having a job, Scott replies, “We love that we set our own schedule and that the time and hard work we put into it is for our own benefit. We have our own vision of how we want to run our business as well as the internal culture of the workplace that we love, and owning our own business allows us to do what we want with it.

Thoughts on buying and selling the business

With the sale of Plese Printing & Marketing complete, Scott Johnson and Kim Plese reflect on their experiences as buyers and sellers, respectively.

Scott Johnson says, “We’ve tried buying other small businesses in the past, but it’s daunting to assess and try to find a good fit. With Minuteman Press, someone was available to help with the process, give advice, and answer questions. I would suggest doing lots of research to find a good fit with your goals and expectations. The education process took many years for Christy and I to find a good fit, and we found it with Minuteman Press – Spokane.

Kim Plese concludes:

As owner/president of Plese Printing and Marketing in Spokane, Washington for over 32 years, I can say without hesitation that my experience with Minuteman Press and Chris Jutt, PNW Regional Vice President, has been incredible to say the least.

I would highly recommend Minuteman Press to anyone considering selling their freelance printing business. Family-owned Minuteman Press has 45 years of success in the printing industry. I was able to sell my business for a fair price knowing that all my years of hard work were going into good hands. All of my staff stayed after the sale and my customers are satisfied knowing they have the great service and quality products they have come to know for years.

I was able to leave the company easily and now I am able to pursue a career in politics and run for an important seat as Spokane County Commissioner! I am so grateful to Chris Jutt for making this possible for me. It was a complete pleasure from start to finish.
