Is the post office open on Thanksgiving Day? Hours and delivery information revealed

Thanksgiving is celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November each year. In 2021, the holiday falls on November 25.

Since it is a federal holiday, many government offices are closed, while some private businesses may also be closed on the same day.

But does that include the United States Postal Service (USPS)?

Here, we take a look at the Thanksgiving Day 2021 times for USPS and courier services.

US Postal Service

The USPS is closed for Thanksgiving. Normal hours of operation vary by branch. Check the store locator on the USPS website for the opening and closing hours of your nearest post office.

USPS branches are also closed on the following federal holidays:

  • New Years Day
  • Martin Luther King Jr Day
  • Memorial day
  • Independence day
  • Labor Day
  • Veterans Day
  • the day of Christmas


Most FedEx services are closed on Thanksgiving Day, with the exception of the FedEx Custom Critical service, which is open on November 25.

Through the FedEx Trade Networks service, customs clearance at land border crossings between the United States and Canada is available 24 hours a day, every day, subject to the availability of Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

Customers are encouraged to contact their FedEx Trade Networks representative for information on the availability of customs clearance at land border crossings between the United States and Mexico.

  • FedEx Freight
  • FedEx office
  • FedEx commercial networks

Many FedEx services are closed or on a modified schedule during Federal Holidays, including Christmas and New Years. Check the FedEx website for more information on its services for all holidays.


UPS pickup and delivery services are closed on Thanksgiving Day, while UPS Store locations are also closed on the same day.

The UPS service guarantee (which had been suspended from the end of March 2020 for all shipments from any origin to any destination due to the COVID-19 pandemic) was reinstated from April 5, 2021 for national services and following internationals:

As of May 10, 2021, the UPS service guarantee was reinstated for the following domestic and cross-border Express services for certain countries outside of the United States:

  • Domestic express
  • Domestic noon
  • National Express Saver

International Cross-Border Express

  • Cross-border express
  • Cross-border Express Plus
  • Save on cross-border express

UPS states, “The service guarantee remains suspended for all other UPS shipments from any origin to any destination. “
