DOT Press Release: YOUNG BROTHERS RECEIVES FIRST MARITIME GRANT FOR NEW SCALES FOR LIFT TRUCKS

Posted on December 17, 2021 in Latest department news, Press room

HONOLULU – The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) is pleased to announce that Young Brothers LLC (YB) has received over $ 200,000 in federal grants from the U.S. Maritime Administration’s (MARAD) Maritime Highways Program to buy scales for forklifts. This is the first project funded by the MH-1 Daniel K. Akaka sea highway since its designation in 2018.

This initiative is part of the Hawaii Commercial Ports System Shipping Services Project, which aims to improve the safety and efficiency of YB’s inter-island cargo operations. Currently, YB customers are responsible for declaring the weight of loads when checking in goods, which contributes to the congestion of traffic from YB gates into HDOT commercial ports. The new scales will provide YB machine operators with real-time weight information as the cargo is prepared in port for shipment.

“The Hawaii Sea Highway is the result of years of work and partnership between HDOT’s Ports Division and port users, and we congratulate Young Brothers for leading this important first step in this program,” said HDOT director Jade Butay. “This grant will help Young Brothers streamline its operations, and these improvements in inter-island navigation benefit everyone in Hawaii.”

“This grant represents an essential and necessary funding mechanism to help modernize our equipment at all of our island ports, enabling our highly skilled employees to move cargo more safely and efficiently in island ports and to load the barge. », Added Jay Ana, President of the Young Brothers. “We thank the Hawaii State Department of Transportation and our delegation to Federal Congress for their support in securing this funding, which plays a critical role in how we continue to evolve to better serve our clients. “

The U.S. Maritime Highways Program provides federal resources and invests in port and land infrastructure that expand the use of the nation’s navigable waters to promote surface ocean transportation and increase the operational efficiency of freight transportation. Hawaii was one of eleven states receiving a total of $ 12.6 million in grants from the U.S. Maritime Highways program in this latest funding announcement.
