In 2020, Urban Racks won a multi-year contract to design and implement this innovative bicycle parking solution. As a result, paid and subscription bike parking is now available at TransLink’s Moody Center, 22nd Street and VCC-Clark SkyTrain stations, as well as the Carvolth Exchange. Brighouse Station and Lonsdale Exchange will be the next locations added in the pilot phase of this project. Bike racks, which run on solar power, help alleviate some of the obstacles preventing commuters from cycling more often. In addition to app-activated individual bike racks which are available on-demand or by subscription, app-activated bicycle docking stations are available for free for up to 24 hours at select locations.
Executive Director of HUB Cycling, Erin O’Melinn, believes that this new infrastructure will help increase the use of cycling in commuter routines. “Bike theft continues to be a barrier preventing people from cycling more often,” O’Melinn said. “Providing better end-of-trip facilities, like these bike racks, will help people store their bikes and other cycling gear safely and embrace biking and transit in their daily commute. ”
CEO of Urban Racks, Kosta ChatziSpiros, sees it as an era of transformation: “Micromobility has a considerable impact on sustainable transport, efficient and green urban planning, and even preventive health care. We have the opportunity to positively influence the way we live, work and play in urban areas. Bike on demand the parking available in TransLink stations makes it possible to rethink the daily journey more easily and more accessible. Urban Racks and Bikeep are proud to be part of this movement, working for a greener and more sustainable future.
